Authentic Connection, EQ and Purposeful Leadership

What drives you to be your best? For each of us it’s a little different, so I’ll tell you some of the things that make me feel significant and you can see if they resonate with you too.

For me, the number one reason I bring my best self to work every day is because I feel I have a direct influence on the success and health of the company. I feel that what I do every day makes a difference in the lives of the people I work with. That’s a testament to the owners of Coastal Payroll and a testament to our culture in the office.

In terms of being a leader and helping those people on my team feel that same sense of purpose and direction here are some of the elements I like to use.

Authentic Connection

Every week, every day, in good times and bad, check in. Really take some time to sit down and ask “how can I help you be your best”. “What are your goals and are you meeting them?” And “how are you… really?”. Asking these questions from a place of curiosity and not judgement is an important factor in keeping my team connected. That and fun outings that have nothing to do with work!

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is best defined as Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness and Social Management. Travis Bradberry says that emotional intelligence skills account for 58% of performance in all job types and that 90% of high performers also exhibit high emotional intelligence. Learning, reading and self-discovery (like seminars and personality profile tests) are tools we use to keep communication lines clear and keep increasing our collective EQ. I'll often buy copies of inspiring books for the team and check in that they're enjoying them. I have to challenge myself to be better in order to lead from a place of self-awareness.

Purposeful Leadership

My reason for being is to create authentic connection. I thrive on challenging people to look at their assumptions and reassess their preconceptions. Sharing your authentic self is the way to relationships that are meaningful and that means being vulnerable. In business as in life no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.

As summer begins, I challenge you to stay engaged, keep your foot on the gas, double down and do so with the assurance that you make a positive difference in every interaction you have. Happy June fellow HR Caférs!
